In their second matchup of this year’s World Cup, the Dutch women faced the USA. Despite the good start of the tournament, the team could not keep up with the American ladies as they lost 18-0.

For the second straight day, the USA won with double digits as they needed only five innings to seal the fate of the Netherlands. Dutch starting pitcher Lisa Bergwerff started well as she retired the first batter she faced. But then things got out of control. Two singles, a double, three walks and two batters hit by a pitch led to seven runs for the USA and the race was run.

In the next two innings, despite allowing four runs, the Dutch pitching settled down a bit but in the fourth inning, the USA stepped on it once more and scored seven runs.

The Dutch ladies had runners in scoring position twice. Once in the first inning when   Esther Maliepaard reached second base and once in the bottom of the fourth, when they had runners on second and third. But despite leading by eighteen runs in the fourth already, the Americans even didn’t allow the Dutch to score one consolation run when Inger Wieringa hit into a fielder’s choice and Isabelle Markies was thrown out at home plate.

In total, the Dutch got on base five times. Three times thanks to a walk and twice on base hits. Famke Gildemacher and Lotte Tanke both went 1 for 2.

Today, the Dutch ladies will face Taiwan, that is ranked sixth in the world ranking.
