Instead of the usual seven innings, the Dutch U15 team needed only four innings to win the opening game of the 2021 U15 European Championship. Except for a scoreless first inning, the Dutch scored at least one run in the remaining three frames.
This year’s tournament is hosted by two countries: The Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czechs are hosting Group A with the Czech Republic, Germany and France. The Slovakians are hosting Group B with Slovakia, Austria, Italy and the Netherlands.
Austria 0 – 15 The Netherlands
After a scoreless inning, the Dutch made up for the not scored runs in the bottom of the second. The first run was scored with a bases-loaded situation when Kimi Verkruijssen singled to left center field. Still with the bases loaded, Tyrell Mercado Reyes drove in another run when he drew a walk. When Mauricio Montenegro Espinoza hit into a fielders choice, Kimi Verkruijssen scored the Dutch third run. A walk, several singles, a double and a wild pitch allowed the Dutch to score a total of eleven runs in that second inning. By then the race was already run, but the Austrians still had to work their way through two more innings.
A 6-3 groundout by Otis Ward, drove in the sole run of the third inning. In the fourth inning, the final score was reached when Junairo Ostiana hit a bases clearing double that drove in three more runs.
The Dutch pitching, Kimi Verkruijssen and Tristan Kuijer did no-hit the Austrians. Only Verkruijssen allowed a walk.
Tomorrow, the Dutch will face Slovakia and on Friday, the runner up of 2019, Italy, will be the opponent.
