Staten Island Yankees become PizzaRats

It was a matter of time. After the name-the-team contest was halted, the team needed to opt for a name sooner or later. With an overwhelming vote, New Yorkers voted for the moniker PizzaRats. But… the team will adopt the name for only five games: June 23rd, July 7th, July 14th, July 21st and August 4th.

The caps on the other hand are. Two navy caps. One with a Rat’s head with a slice of pizza on the background. The other has a circular logo that says NYC
with the Y in the shape of a slice of pizza with a bite out of the top. The N and the C are the same styles of script as on old NY subway tokens. DSC_0038.jpg

Next to the cap logos, there are three other logos. One, also circular, has a slice of pizza in the center and is surrounded by the name of Staten Island. This logo will be worn on the left sleeve of the jersey.

Two alternate logos show a running rat wearing an apron and a chef’s hat and carrying a slice of pizza on his right shoulder.  The other alternate logo shows a bat with a slice of pizza hanging over it. The bat is interlocked with two interlocking letters, the S and the I.

The question is if the Staten Island Yankees (A Short Season affiliate of the New York Yankees in the New York-Penn League), who are playing at the other side of the Upper and Lower Bay, adjacent to New Jersey, will ever switch to a different moniker permanently. Personally, I wouldn’t mind if they keep this brand. It is witty, it is good looking and it has a link with New York for sure.
