European Champions Cup 2018: Day two
The second day was clearly a day of surprises. In the first game, L&D Amsterdam Pirates was blown away by the Rouen Huskies. But in the second game of today, the Heidenheim Heideköpfe stunned A.S.D. Rimini Pirates by beating them 3-1. Fortitudo Bologna put T&A San Marino on the rack as they won
A.S.D. Rimini Pirates 1 – 3 Heidenheim Heideköpfe
After Rimini had runners in scoring position twice, in the first and in the third inning, Heidenheim took the lead on a two-run home run by Gary Owens.
One inning later, Rimini cut the lead in half when Federico Celli doubled Alexander Romero home.
In the fifth inning, Luke Sommer got into trouble and was replaced by Panagiotis Sykaras on the mound. Rimini got the bases loaded but Sykaras got out of the inning without any damage. In the seventh, Rimini became dangerous one more time as Miquel Noguera reached third base but once again, Sykaras got out of the inning without damage.
In the meantime, Heidenheim had extended their lead as Gary Owens hit a solo home run to give the Heideköpfe a 3-1 lead.
Clayton Freimuth pitched the final inning for the save as he struck out two. Panagiotis Sykaras earned the win after 3.1 innings in which he walked two and fanned three.
Alex Bassani took the loss after 3.1 innings in which he gave up two runs on five hits and a walk.
Johannes Krumm and Simon Guehring were the best hitters for the Heideköpfe as they went 2 for 3. Gary Owens though, had the biggest impact as he drove in all three runs for Heidenheim on home runs.
Fortitudo Bologna 12 – 4 T&A San Marino
In the battle between two Serie A1 teams, Fortitudo Bologna stayed at the right side of the score. After Bologna had taken a 5-0 lead and appeared to walk away, San Marino rallied for three runs in the fifth inning to make it a game again so it seemed. But Bologna stepped on it once again in the sixth inning to score twice on a double hit by Lorenzo Dobboletta.
Lack of control by the San Marino pitching and several clutch hits led to five more runs for Bologna in the seventh inning, leaving San Marino far behind.
With a new pitcher on the mound for Bologna, it looked like San Marino could bounce back as they loaded the bases with no outs, but the team managed to score only one run on a sac fly as Chris Collabello grounded into an inning-ending double play.
In the following two innings, neither team did not score anymore.
Jorge Martinez earned the win for Bologna. In six innings he gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk as he struck out nine. Cesar Jimenez took the loss after 5.1 innings. He gave up seven runs on six hits and five walks and also struck out nine.
Lorenzo Dobboletta was the best hitter for Fortitudo Bologna with four hits out of five at bats. He hit a double and a triple, drove in two and scored once. With this win, Bologna secured a spot in the semi-finals.
