Nike to take over uniform deal from Under Armour
About a year and a half ago, MLB announced a deal with Under Armour, who would provide the on-field clothing for all thirty MLB clubs starting in 2020. Today the Sports Business Journal announced that MLB is about to strike a deal with Nike to replace Under Armour.
This deal comes as a surprise. With much fanfare, the deal with Under Armour was announced a year and a half ago. The biggest issue of that deal was the UA logo that would appear on a prominent place on the chest of the uniform, a slap in the face for the Yankees as that team never sported a logo of a supplier on their jerseys before.
With Under Armour in financial trouble, the deal with Nike will save them at least $50 million.
It is likely the Nike swoosh will have a similar prominent spot on the jerseys even though this logo is more refined than the UA of Under Armour.
The deal with Nike is not official yet but the Sports Business Journal says it will be announced with the 2018 All-Star break in Washington DC. The SBJ states the deal is done for 80%. As soon as the deal has been hammered out, Nike will be the official uniform supplier of three major leagues. Only Adidas is the supplier of the NHL for which the German sports equipment producer started to supply at the beginning of the 2017/2018 season.
