Loek van Mil bounces back from two poor outings

After two previous two games in which he gave up five runs (four earned) and in which his ERA skyrocketed, Loek van Mil bounced back today with a decent outing. In a no-save situation, Loek kept the Melbourne Aces from scoring.

In a game that was a lot closer than the final score made it look like, the Adelaide Bit struck first and never had to look back. In the first inning, with the bases loaded, Michael Lohr singled to center field and drove in Rodrigo Ayarza and Max Brown. The third run was scored by Kuan-Jen Chen on a groundout to first base.

Melbourne got on the board one inning later when Michael Crouse scored from third base on a line drive single to center field, hit by Matthew Zablan. From that inning on the pitching of both sides kept their opponent in check for six innings.

In the top of the fifth, Melbourne’s pitching collapsed. Reliever Blake Cunningham, who entered the ninth to keep the Bite from scoring, loaded the bases. He managed to strike out Bas Nooij, who failed to lay down a sac bunt to advance Jordan McArdle to second base. Nooij went 1 for 4 today with two strikeouts.
With the bases loaded, Max Brown walked in the fourth run for the Bite. The final blow was dealt by Kuan-Jen Chen, who hit a no doubt grand slam to right field.

In the bottom of the ninth, Loek van Mil was sent to the mound. The first two pitches were much on the inside and almost hit Michael Crouse. But Crouse hit a soft lineout to second base thanks to a broken bat. Craig Maddox was the second out Van Mil recorded as he grounded out 5-3. After giving up a walk to Chris Burke, Van Mil recorded the final out himself as he fanned Oliver McMahon.

Thanks to this shutout inning, Van Mil lowered his ERA from 4.08 to 3.86.

Today’s win was only the eighth of the season for the Bite, who are dead last in the standings, trailing the league-leading Brisbane Bandits by eighteen games with an 8-26 record.

Talking about the Bandits. Today they suffered a rare loss vs the Pearth Heat. German Donald Lutz, who was recently appointed as the GCL Reds batting coach, was red hot lately with a league-leading fourteen home runs. Today, Lutz went 0 for 4.
