In the third game of this series between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Italy, the Dutch stayed at the right side of the score this time. Both teams collected six hits but the three errors the Italians committed, costed them the game as the Dutch scored four unearned runs and won 5-2.
Even though both teams had runners in scoring position, neither team did score in the first three innings. The Dutch had the biggest chance to open the score in the second inning as they had a runner on third with just one out. But Alex Basani retired the next two batters to get out of the inning without any damage.
But eventually Italy opened the score in the fourth inning. With Rob Cordemans on the mound, Robel Garcia homered to right field to get Italy on the board first. One inning later, Dwayne Kemp doubled home Remco Draijer to tie the game at one.
In the sixth inning, the Dutch broke out and scored four runs.
With the bases loaded, Remco Draijer hit towards pitcher Claudio Scotti, who committed a throwing error that allowed the Dutch to score two unearned runs. Two more unearned runs were scored when first baseman Alberto Mineo, who bobbled the ball on a “hit” by Dwayne Kemp.
In the meantime, a quartet of Dutch pitchers had given up one run only. Rob Cordemans pitched four frames in which he allowed the Italians to score that sole run on three hits as he struck out eight. Maickel Rietel and Mike Bolsenbroek pitched one frame and Orlando Yntema all pitched two. Rietel fanned two, Bolsenbroek walked one and Yntema allowed a run on two hits, walked one and struck out one. The one run Yntema allowed, scored on a wild pitch.
Yntema also pitched the final inning in which he gave up a single to Paolino Ambrosino, who was thrown out at a stealing attempt. for the final out of the game.
Mike Bolsenbroek earned the win after pitching one inning. The loss went to Claudio Scotti, who gave up three unearned runs in only 0.1 inning.
The best hitter for the Dutch was Stijn van der Meer, who went 2 for 4. Dwayne Kemp drove in the only earned run.
