Promotion/relegation competition 2017: Round 3, day 1
On the first day of the third round of the promotion/relegation competition, Pickles UVV hosted De Glaskoning Twins, DSS hosted Storks and Quick Amersfoort “hosted” Onze Gezellen.
De Glaskoning Twins 4 – 1 Pickles UVV
For the players of De Glaskoning Twins, this was a makeup game for the games they lost against Pickles UVV during the regular season.
In a game that was exciting until the final out, Twins stayed at the right side of the score. But it wasn’t an easy win. From the fourth inning, Twins had only a 1-0 lead and was kept in check by UVV pitcher Jurjen van Zijl. The Twins lineup was eager at bat. Sometimes even too eager. UVV, on the other hand, was patient in the batter’s box. The difference between both pitchers was clear. Where Brendand Schoemaker needed 119 pitches in seven innings to keep UVV from scoring, Jurjen van Zijl needed only eight more to pitch a complete game.
In the seventh, Gino Yonis scored after he had gotten on base on a double to right field. Jonis advanced to third on a 6-3 groundout and scored on Mick Molenaar’s sac fly to right field. In the ninth, with two outs, Bart Janssen came through with a single up the middle at the right time. With this single, he drove in two much-needed insurance runs. Daisuke Yamashita, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, Got into trouble as he loaded the bases
with only one out. Jelle Blaauw drove in the sole run for UVV on a sac fly to right field.
Brendan Schoemaker earned the win. In seven innings, he gave up only five hits and a walk and fanned nine. Despite pitching a good game until the eighth inning, Jurjen van Zijl was tabbed for the loss.
Best hitter for De Glaskoning Twins was Gino Jonis. He went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a RBI and a run scored.
Thanks to this win, De Glaskoning Twins is almost secured of another season of hoofdklasse baseball. Pickles UVV, on the other hand, stands with its back against the wall. They have to start winning now to avoid a relegation.
Storks 2 – 4 DSS
Together with De Glaskoning Twins, DSS remains unbeaten.
After DSS had taken a 2-0 lead, on run on a solo shot by Djewi Appelman in the fourth inning, Storks tied the game in the fifth inning. A fielding error by third baseman Omar Williams allowed Quinlan de Windt to cut DSS’ lead in half.
Thanks to the throwing error, Jurriaan Dijk advanced to third base and scored on Joran Berkhout’s sac fly to left field.
Martin Kram, who pitched seven strong innings, was replaced by Tjibbe van Dijk in the eighth inning. Van Dijk kept DSS at bay in the eighth inning but in the ninth he could not get out of the inning. He recorded two quick outs but then gave up a single to Sven van de Sanden and a two-run home run to Levine Gabriels for the loss. Tjibbe van Dijk gave up three hits.
The win went to Tom Stuifbergen, who pitched two perfect innings in relief as he struck out four.
Best hitter for DSS was Odion Gouverneur, who went 2 for 3.
Onze Gezellen 5 – 10 Quick Amersfoort
Quick Amersfoort was the “home” team in Almere where Quick is playing its games
during this promotion/relegation competition.
A seven-run sixth inning was enough for Quick to clinch the victory.

In the fifth frame, Tom Vreeken singled through the right side with runners on the corners to drive in Nils Mica.
But a big sixth inning for Quick Amersfoort sealed the fate of Onze Gezellen. After Niels van Weert scored the game tying run, Quick loaded the bases. Singles by Luigino Rosaria and Kevin Windster drove in four runs. Niels van Weert’s single up the middle drove in two additional runs. But that wouldn’t be all as Quick scored a run in the seventh and in the eighth innings, but not before Onze Gezellen had scored three more runs in the seventh inning.
Winning pitcher was Mees Cremer, who pitched 1.1 innings in relief and gave up two
runs on three hits and two walks and struck out four. The loss went to Raymond Rutte, who pitched 6.0 innings and gave up nine runs on ten hits and four walks. He also struck out six.
