Promotion/ relegation competition 2017: Round 2, day 2

On day two of round two, the hoofdklasse clubs all had the home advantage. DSS mashed Quick Amersfoort in seven innings, Storks handed Pickles UVV its second loss in this weekend and De Glaskoning Twins needed eight innings to finish the job vs Onze Gezellen.

Quick Amersfoort  0  –  11  DSS
DSS needed seven innings to win the game vs Quick Amersfoort. After two scoreless innings, the club from Haarlem scored three runs in the third, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth inning. Despite the eleven runs DSS scored, the team hit only three extra base hits; two doubles and one home run (a two run shot by Omar Williams). Five errors on the side of Quick Amersfoort led to three unearned runs for DSS.
Tim Halderman pitched five solid innings for the win. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out two.

Best hitter for DSS was Devano Pieter, who went 3 for 3 with a double and a run scored.

Storks  10  –  6  Pickles UVV
Another back-and-forth affair in this promotion/relegation competition.
Pickles UVV took what looked like a commanding 4-0 lead in the first two innings as the team scored three in the first inning and one run in the second inning.
Even after Storks scored a run in the third, there didn’t seem to be a problem. But after scoring a run in the fifth inning, Storks tied the game at four in the sixth. After Tino van Ancum gave up a walk in the sixth, he was replaced by Kevin van Veen. Van Veen hit two hitters with a pitch to load the bases. Philip Brandl followed with a single down the left field line to tie the game. Storks even took a 5-4 lead but UVV turned the tables once more as it scored twice in the eighth inning. With runners on the corners, Rick Kuipers drove in Mike Bazuin with a bunt towards the pitcher. Jordan Illis scored on the throwing error that followed on Julian Goins’ “hit” towards second base.
But a disastrous ninth inning sealed UVV’s fate. Three walks loaded the bases for Storks before Tyron de Windt singled home Randy van Hoek. Still with a bases loaded situation, Joost van den Bergh drew a walk. Julian van Lith was replaced on the mound by Roderick Hennekes, but he started with a wild pitch that allowed Tijani Dunlop to score.
A sac fly and another wild pitch drove in two more runs to give Storks a 10-6 lead.
Tjibbe van Dijk, who replaced Jurrian Koks in the eighth inning, gave up a walk to start the ninth inning, but then retired the next three batters for the win. In 1.1 innings, he walked one and struck out two. Kevin van Veen, who pitched two frames, took the loss. He was tabbed for three runs on three hits and five walks.

Best hitter for Storks was Tyron de Windt, who went 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

UVV still has a couple of games to play, so all’s not lost yet, but thanks to this loss, the team has dropped into the lower half of the standings.

Onze Gezellen  2  –  12  De Glaskoning Twins
After yesterday’s (perhaps somewhat flattered) win over Onze Gezellen, De Glaskoning Twins clinched another mercy rule victory. Today the club needed eight innings to end the game prematurely. The team could have done it in seven, but the pitching of Twins allowed a run in the seventh inning so the margin stood at nine runs.
Proof for the amateur status of baseball in the Netherlands was the the pencilled starting pitcher of Onze Gezellen who wasn’t able to play because of obligations at work.
In fact, the game was decided after the first inning. Three doubles, two singles and a ball that was hit into an around-the-horn double play, led to five runs for Twins.
In the third Twins walked away to an 8-0 lead, partially thanks to a solo shot by Gino Jonis.

Twins’ starting pitcher Reynald Sarmiento lasted four innings in which he gave up an unearned run. His successor, Jan Evertse earned the win after two innings of relief in which he allowed just one hit.
A three run sixth inning gave Twins a ten run lead but when Onze Gezellen scored another run in the top of the seventh inning and Twins did not score in the bottom of that inning, the eighth inning was needed. Mick Molenaar eventually drove in the game ending run in the eighth as he hit through the left side of the infield to drive in Nick Peels from third base.

Best hitter for De Glaskoning Twins was Dennis de Quint, who hit two doubles out of two at bats and drove in one and score one run himself.
