On the first day of the tenth round of the 2017 competition, De Glaskoning Twins “hosted” new European champion Curaçao Neptunus in Rotterdam, HCAW hosted DSS and Hoofddorp Pioniers hosted Pickles UVV.
Curaçao Neptunus 12 – 10 De Glaskoning Twins
After winning two of the previous three games vs DSS last week, De Glaskoning Twins took on Curaçao Neptunus. After trailing 3-0 after 2.5 innings, Twins had a big third inning. With Christian Diaz on the mound and runners on first and second, Melvin Perdue singled up the middle to move up all runners a base, but thanks to a throwing error by center fielder Jochem Koedijk, Bram Grooten could score the first run for Twins. and the other runners advanced an extra base. After Chris Gé singled home Dennis de Quint, Bob van der Meera doubled down the left field line to clear the bases. Denzel Bryson doubled home van der Meer for Twins’ fifth run of the game.
But the lead did not last very long as Neptunus had a big inning in the fifth frame. Stijn van der Meer got on base thanks to a throwing error of his brother Bob. Back-to-back singles by Gregory Muller and Gianison Boekhoudt drove in Stijn van der Meer to bring Neptunus within a run from Twins. Christian Fernandes doubled home Muller and made Boekhoudt advanced to third. Ruar Verkerk got on base on a fielder’s choice as he “hit” to second baseman Dennis de Quint, who fired the ball towards catcher Denzel Bryson, who tagged out Gianison Boekhoudt at home plate. After Neptunus loaded the bases, starting pitcher Jeremy Atkinson was replaced by Jan Evertse. Evertse started by giving up a single to Jochem Koedijk, who drove in two runs. A wild pitch made Koedijk advance to second base and Urving Kemp score the fifth run of the inning.
But in the sixth inning, Twins scored two runs to get back in the game again. After Henk van Heijningen, who made his hoofdklasse debut, issued a leadoff walk to Bram Grooten, he was replaced by Misja Harcksen. After Grooten stole second base, Harcksen retired the next two batters before giving up a walk to Gino Yonis and a triple to Chris Gé that drove in two runs for Twins.
Neptunus scored four more runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 12-7 lead. Twins rallied in the eighth inning but the rally fell short to overtake Neptunus. Twins scored three runs to reach the final score of 12-10.
Winning pitcher was debuting Henk van Heijningen, who pitched 2.1 innings in which he gave up one run on two hits and two walks. Jeremy Atkinson took the loss after 4.2 innings in which he gave up eight runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks. He also struck out three.
Best hitter for Curaçao Neptunus was Gregory Muller, who went 2 for 3 with a RBI and two runs scored.
DSS 2 – 6 HCAW
HCAW loaded the bases in the first inning on back-to-back walks and a single, back-to-back singles by Sven Jongejans and Raoell Kortstam drove in two runs.
After the dreaded sun delay that lasted forty minutes, DSS fought back. Steven van Groningen gave up back-to-back-to-back walks to load the bases in relief followed by a sac fly to center field hit by Koen Halderman on which Mitchel Dautzenberg scored the first run for DSS. DSS loaded the bases once more when Omar Williams drew a walk. That was the sign for manager Henrique Sr. to replace Van Groningen by Oscar Meuris.
But Meuris did not start very well as he hit Timo van Erk with a pitch to allow DSS to score the game-tying run.
But HCAW would turn around the game in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Vince Rooi singled to right field to drive in Raoell Kortstam for the go-ahead run. With the bases loaded, Byron Cornelisse hit Kevin Dirksen with a pitch to allow HCAW to score the second run of the seventh inning. Boyd Tuhumury scored when Rossini Frolijk hit into a fielder’s choice. But instead of an out, Kevin Nieveld made a throwing error that allowed Tuhumury to score. Vince Rooi eventually scored the final run of the game on a sac fly hit by Kevin Weijgertse.
Oscar Meuris earned the win after 1.1 innings of work in which he walked on and fanned one. Tim Halderman took the loss after 1.1 innings in relief. Halderman gave up three runs on two hits and a walk.
Best hitter for HCAW was Roelie Henrique Jr. who went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Pickles UVV 1 – 8 Hoofddorp Pioniers
In a quick game that lasted only 2 hours and 40 minutes, Pickles UVV was no match for Hoofddorp Pioniers, even though UVV collected as many hits as Pioniers (11). The score makes clear Pioniers was more clutch than UVV in this game.
Pioniers opened the score in the first inning when Joey Eeman scored on a 4-3 ground out hit by Shurman Marlin. The second run in that inning was scored by Jeffrey Arends, who crossed home plate from second base on a single up the middle hit by Max Draijer.
Back-to-back solo shots by Shurman Marlin and Jeffrey Arends contributed to the four runs that Pioniers scored in the sixth inning.
Eventually, Pickles UVV scored their sole run in the ninth inning. With runners on first and second, Kevin van Veen singled to right center field and drove in Jose Moreno.
Even though Lars Huijer gave up eight hits, he pitched eight shutout innings in which he walked one and fanned eight for the win. Timo van Ancum took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. He gave up three walks and struck out four.
Best hitter for Hoofddorp Pioniers was Max Draijer, who went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored.
