European Champions Cup 2017: Day 3

Two games next to the ones with the Dutch teams involved: Fortitudo Bologna vs Mainz Athletics and A.S.D. Rimini Pirates vs T&A San Marino. In the game between Bologna and Mainz, it showed what a lack of pitching depth can lead to.

Mainz Athletics  2  –  22  Fortitudo Bologna
The Mainz Athletics weren’t a shadow of their selves of yesterday’s game vs Curaçao Neptunus. In that game, they used their best pitcher and it showed today.
The Athletics were no match for Bologna.
In the first two innings Yannic Wildenhain could limit the damage to three runs but in the fourth, Bologna scored seven to run away to a 10-0 lead.  Once again they did not push enough to finish the game in five innings.
At the start of the seventh inning, Bologna had a 14-2 lead. And from that moment it showed that the team doesn’t have enough pitching depth. Ben Briggs loaded the bases and gave up a run before he was pulled and replaced by Timothy Kotowski. Kotowski gave up a double, a sac fly and a single that drove in four runs (for which Briggs was tabbed). Eventually, Bologna scored eight runs in that seventh inning to reach the final score of 22-2.

Andrea Pizziconi earned the win after six innings in which he gave up two runs on six hits and a walk. Pizziconi also struck out two.
Best hitter for Fortitudo Bologna was Marco Sabbatani, who went 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored. The most impact had Paolo Ambrosino, who went 3 for 4 with four runs.

T&A San Marino  6  –  3  A.S.D. Rimini Pirates
The two arch rivals of the IBL faced each other in a winner take all game. The winner of this game would advance to the semi finals to face Curaçao Neptunus from Rotterdam.
T&A San Marino took an early lead in the first inning when Sebastiano Poma tripled to right center field and scored on Duran Epifano’s 5-3 ground out.
In the next inning, San Marino extended the score with a run when Nicholas Morreale doubled and scored on Gabriele Ermini’s double to right field.
In the bottom of the second inning, A.S.D. Rimini would cut San Marino’s lead in half when Giovanni Garbella scored on a bases loaded walk. A two run third inning, gave Rimini the lead which would not last long as San Marino tied teh game in the sixth inning.

It is well known both teams aren’t the best of friends, which showed in the bottom of the ninth when Juan Carlos Infante tried to score from second on a double. But as he was tagged out at home plate, he crashed into the catcher with is elbow pointing forward. This was the cause of a bench clearing brawl in which some punches were thrown.

Eventually, the game was suspended for a while. After the game was started again, neither team did score, so extra innings were needed. T&A San Marino executed the tie-breaker situation the best as they scored three runs.  Rimini failed to take advantage of the runners on base and fell to San Marino 9-3.

Winning pitcher was Rios Ascanio, who pitched three frames in which he allowed two hits, walked two and fanned four. Carlos Teran took the loss. In three innings, he gave up three unearned runs, two because of the tie-breaker rule and one due to a dropped fly ball in center field.

Best hiter for T&A San Marino was Duran Epifano, who went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and a run scored.
