Eugene Helder promoted to AAA out of the blue

So far the professional career of Aruban infielder Eugene Helder never got any further than Summer League baseball. But now all of a sudden, Eugene was called up to AAA Tacoma and played a game with the Rainiers.

In 2014 Eugene played in the VSL, and in 2015 and 2016 he played in the DSL. In those years he hit respectively .267, .313 and .277.  On the defensive side, previous season was a successful one for Eugene. He played at several positions and only at first base and second base he committed a total of three errors combined. At the other positions (SS, 3B and left field), Eugene played flawlessly.
Last night, Eugene debuted in Fresno against the Grizzlies. The AAA team of the Houston Astros stayed at the right side of the score, beating the Tacoma Rainiers (Seattle Mariners) 12-9.

Eugene batted last in the lineup. In his first at bat, in the second inning, Eugene lined into a 1-3 double play.

In his second at-bat, in the top of the third inning, Helder reached base on an error by right fielder Teoscar Hernandez, that allowed three runners to score.

In his second at-bat, in the sixth inning, Helder tripled to center field on which Tuffy Gosewisch could score.

In the eighth inning, Eugene hit into a 6-3 groundout.

So going 1 for 4 in your AAA debut isn’t too shabby.

It remains to be seen whether he can survive at AAA level and if the Mariners want to keep him there. A few years ago, Juremi Profar, younger brother of Jurickson, was promoted to AAA from A full season. After a few games he was demoted again and it appeared that he was only there to fill a void temporarily.
