Gianfranco Wawoe added to Mariners roster

Curacao infielder Gianfranco Wawoe has been added to the spring training roster of the Seattle Mariners. But even though the M’s fielded split squad teams, Gianfranco did not make his seasonal debut.

Yesterday, the Seattle Mariners announced on their transaction page that Gianfranco was assigned to the team.

It isn’t the first time that Gianfranco is added to the roster of the Mariners. In the previous two years, he played a total of six games in which he got three at bats but did not manage to get a basehit.

Gianfranco broke into professional baseball in 2011 when he played with the Mariners of the Venezuelan Summer League. In the next two seasons he would stay at that level before moving up to the Pulaski Mariners in 2014. In 2015 he split the season between the AA Jackson Generals and the A Full Season Clinton LumberKings. In that season he had a combined batting average of .266 and a fielding percentage of .978.

The 2016 season with the Bakersfield Blaze was so so, defensive wise as he committed 20 errors as second baseman. At bat he did a much better job, hitting .288 with 8 homeruns and 17 doubles.

Gianfranco also made appearances for team Kingdom of the Netherlands during the inaugural Premier 12 tournament in 2015.
