Ozzie Albies, the talented infielder from Curacao, who just turned 20, has received an invitation for Spring Training Camp as a non-roster invitee by the Atlanta Braves. Ozzie has to report at the Braves Spring Training complex at ESPN Wide World of Sport complex on February 18.
This will be the third time that Albies will attend the Spring Training with the big boys. In 2015 the talented kid debuted with the Braves during Spring Training, when he played four games for the MLB squad. Last year, Albies even played sixteen games in which he batted a very respectable .371 (thirteen hits and a homerun). Despite his good numbers, he was sent down to AA Mississippi, where he only played about twenty games before he was promoted to AAA Gwinnett. During his last ten games before his promotion, Ozzie slaughtered the opponent’s pitching as he hit a whopping .429.
With the Gwinnett Braves he had some trouble to adapt to the level of AAA in the beginning, but eventually, he crawled up and lifted his average to .248. Halfway the season, Albies was demoted to AA Mississippi again to form a double play tandem with Dansby Swanson, the top prospect of the Braves.
Swanson eventually was promoted to the Bigs and Albies stayed behind at AA. On September 30 Ozzie was put on the 7-day DL and finished the season there.
It remains to be seen where Albies will start the season but once he will get promoted to Atlanta, he will play second base for sure since Dansby Swanson is a fix at shortstop.
The Braves will kick off the Spring Training games on Saturday, February 25 against the Toronto Blue Jays.
