Mainz Athletics dominating to German title

For seven innings the game between last year’s runner up Regensburg Legionaere and the Mainz Athletics. was rather lopsided. The strong pitching of the Mainz Athletics, in the person of Eric Massingham, kept the Legionaere on a leash for six innings. But Claytn Voechting of the Legionaere pitched well in the first four innings as he kept the Athletics from scoring. But eventually the Athletics broke the spell in the fifth inning and never looked back.

Until the fourth inning the rain gods stayed away but at the end of the fourth inning, heaven opened its flood gates and the game was delayed for a long period. But not before Mainz got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Peter Johannessen drew a walk, followed by a single to centerfield hit by Thomas de Wolf on which Johannessen advanced to third. Eventually Johannessen was driven in on a sac fly to center field, hit by Max Boldt.

After the rain delay, Mainz left the locker rooms in better shape and extended their lead to 2-0 when Trey Stover scored on a force out at second hit by Nicolas Weichert.

A three run seventh inning dealt the final blow to Regensburg  which managed to get on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning when the team scored two runs.
But in the ninth inning, Tim Stahlmann retired the side with two strikeouts and a 6-3 ground out.

Eric Massingham earned the win for Mainz. In a dominating outing of six innings, he gave up only one hit, walked three and struck out two. His team mate Tim Stahlmann earned the save despite giving up two runs on three hits in the eighth inning. Stahlmann pitched three innings, walked three and struck out four.
Clayton Voechting took the loss after 6.1 innings in which he gave up five runs on seven hits and six walks. He struck out one.

Best hitter for Mainz was Lucas Dickman, who went 2 for 3 with two RBI.

With this win, the Mainz Athletics won their second ever German championship. They had to wait nine years since their first championship in 2007 to uncork the champagne bottles.

Max Boldt was named MVP of the championship series. His team mates Thomas de Wolf (best hitter) and Jan-Niclas Stoecklin (best pitcher) also earned some hardware.
