Dutchie baseball news: Jansen agrees on one year deal

The Dodgers have avoided salary arbitration with their star closer Kenley Jansen.
They signed the 28-year old closer from Curacao, who filed for salary arbitration on Tuesday and who was the last of those Dodgers players that remained unsigned. This was the third time in a row that Kenley avoided salary arbitration by signing a one-year deal.

Jansen reportedly will receive $10.65 million for the 2016 season. As he has served six years at the end of the season, Kenley will be eligible for free agency.

Jansen has a 2.28 career ERA and an ).94 WHIP in parts of six major league seasons with the Dodgers, with 528 strikeouts and 108 walks in 340 innings. He trails franchise leader Eric Gagne by 19 saves on the all time Dodgers save list. Jansen has saved 142 games.

Jansen had a great year as he only blew two saves of 38 opportunities. He posted a 2.41 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.

Jansen started his baseball career as a catcher. With the 2009 World Baseball Classic he was the starting catcher for team Netherlands. But in the 2009 season, when with the Inland Empire 66ers, the Dodgers tried to convert him into a pitcher. After that season he played in the Arizona Fall League and was put on the 40-man roster. Halfway the next seasaon Jansen got a call up and debuted against the New York Mets. He clinched his first save on July 25 when he retired the side in the ninth.

Jansen started the 2015 season on the disabled list due to a growth from a bone in his left foot. Eventually he needed surgery to remove this growth. Kenley returned with the Dodgers on May 15.

Next to this bone growth, Kenley has know some other health issues as well. He missed parts of the 2011 and 2012 season due to an irregular heartbeat. Eventually he was cauterized in October 2012.

The Dodgers have not confirmed the deal with Kenley yet.
