Juan Carlos Sulbaran to Cardinals
After becoming a minor league free agent after the 2015 season, Juan Carlos Sulbaran from Curacao signed a minor league contract with the
St. Louis Cardinals, the cross state rivals of his former MLB organization, the Kansas City Royals.
Last season, Sulbaran played most part for the Royals’ AA farm team, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals of the Texas League. In the course of the season, Sulbaran was promoted to the AAA Omaha StormChasers of the Pacific Coast League, where he posted a 3-3 record with a 6.17 ERA. With the Naturals, he played in twenty games in which he earned seven wins vs ten losses with a 4.80 ERA. Combined in the two leagues, Juan Carlos was hit rather well as his opponents batted .285.
Together with Shawn Zarraga, who recently extended his contract with the Dodgers, Sulbaran participated in the Premier 12 tournament with team Kingdom of the Netherlands, last month.
It remains to be seen on which Cardinals farm team Sulbaran will be placed. Most likely options will be the Memphis RedBirds (Pacific Coast League) or the Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League, so no matter the outcome, he will play in a league that he has played in last season.
