Lynchburg HillCats on the brink of being sold

LynchburgHillcats.pngAt the moment, the baseball Winter Meeting is going on. One of the teams that is on the market to be sold/bought is the Lynchburg HillCats. The HillCats are still owned by the Lynchburg Baseball Corp, but soon that will change.

The Elmore Sports Group is hammering out a deal with the LBC and a few terms need to be finalized. The Elmore Sports Group reportedly promised to stay in Lynchburg for ten more years if the group pays off the $2.1 million that the HillCats still owe the city of Lynchburg for a 2004 renovation of Calvin Falwell Field. In exchange, the city of Lynchburg will use that $2.1 million to reinvest in stadium improvements (new seating behind homeplate, new netting, playing-field renovations and an upgrade of the parking lot.

The Elmore Sports Group is a rathe big player in the minor league market as they own the Colorado Springs SkySox (AAA Pacific Coast League), the San Antonio Missions (AA Texas League), the Inland Empire 66ers (A Advanced California League), the Eugene Emeralds (A Short Season Northwest League) and the Idaho Falls Chuckars (Advanced Rookie, Pioneer League).

The HillCats were founded in 1963 and were part of the Southern League until 1965. In 1966, the club jumped leagues and became a part of the Carolina League (A Advanced). The club is only named HillCats since 1995. In the previous years the club was named after its parent club: White Sox (1963-1969), Twins (1970-1974), Rangers (1975), Mets (1976-1987), Red Sox (1988-1994). Currently the HillCats are an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.

The HillCats won the Carolina League pennant in 1978, 1983, 1984, 1997, 2002, 2009 and 2012.

A couple of well known MLB players once called the HillCats their home: Andrelton Simmons, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Aramis Ramirez, Lenny Dykstra, Jose Bautista and Billy Beane (yeah, the money ball guy).
