O’s sign talent from Aruba
The Baltimore Orioles signed Gillian Wernet from Aruba the other day.
Gillian played on his native Aruba for the BlueClaws Indians. In 2014 he also participated in the MLB Fall Tournament that was played in Hoofddorp (Netherlands). In that tournament he was a member of the Dutch Caribbean team. The 17-year old pitched in two games in that tournament and he didn’t give up an earned run.
Gillian was selected to the International Prospects, an international All Star Team that participated in the inaugural International Prospect Series in Gary NC.
This International All Star Team contained players from Central and South America. Curacao and Aruba both sent one player each. All the players that were on this team made a chance of signing a contract with an MLB organization.
In 2011 Gillian represented the Caribbean in the Little League World Series. Back then he played shorstop and pitcher.
The Aruban team qualified for the the tournament in Williamsport PA, by beating the Virgin Islands in the regional final 4-2.
Here is a clip from 2011 in which he shows his skills.
