Another career night for Didi and how other Dutchies were faring

The Texas Rangers are certainly not one of the strongest teams this season, but a pummeling like last night could not be forseen. In a slugfest, the Yankees spanked the Rangers 21-5. Once again Didi Gregorius saw the ball very well.
In the first inning the Yankees didn’t score yet and Chris Capuano showed his old self as he lasted only 0.2 innings in which he gave up five earned runs on three hits. At that moment, things looked rather gloomy for the Yankees, but in the second inning fifteen Yankees stepped into the batters box. It all started with a lead off line drive double by Chris Young towards left field, followed by a line drive to center field by Chase Headley on which Young was able to score. When John Ryan Murphy singled and Didi Gregorius was hit by a pitch the bases were loaded. Brendan Ryan followed with a double that drove in Murphy and Headley and moved Gregorius to third. Singles by Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner and a double by Alex Rodriguez drove in three more runs. After Mark Teixeira struck out for the first out of the inning, Chris Young drew a walk. A single by Chase Headley drove in Brett Gardner and loaded the bases. After relief pitcher Wandy Rodriguez had retired John Ryan Murphy with a K for the second out, Didi Gregorius hit a bases clearing triple down to center field. Eventually Didi scored the eleventh run on a double by Brendan Ryan.

Diego Moreno, called up from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on July 28, had replaced Chris Capuano in the first inning and cruised through 5.1 innings, issuing only one walk and striking out five for the win. Adam Warren pitched the three remaining innings in a perfect fashion for the save.

Eventually the Yankees would score ten more runs and collected a total of  nineteen hits. Didi Gregorius saw the ball well again and went 4 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Chris Young had the most impact as he went 3 for 6 with a grand slam homerun, that gave the Yankees a ten run lead over the Rangers, and five RBI. Only Mark Teixeira, Garrett Jones and Stephen Drew went hitless .

Normally when a team is struggling, most players on the squad are struggling too. This is not the case with Xander Bogaerts. Xander was red hot in the month of July. Even though he has cooled off a little bit, he is still hitting a very respectable .311. Last night in a game that was preceded by the retirement of new Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez’ uniform number, Xander “only” went 1 for 4 and committed a (throwing) error, his sixth of the season.
I still don’t understand why he wasn’t on the AL All Star Game squad.

In a game where two Dutchies faced each other (Braves @ Orioles), Andrelton Simmons went 0 for 2. So far Simmons has a decent season at bat but in his last few games his batting average is sliding down a bit. The other Dutchie in this game, Jonathan Schoop entered the game in the ninth as a defensive substituton for Travis Snyder.
