Dutch Hoofdklasse, Saturday June 27

On day two of the third round of the second half of the season, the following games were scheduled:

Curacao Neptunus @ Mampaey the Hawks; L&D Amsterdam Pirates @ Corendon Kinheim; Pronto DSS @ Vaessen Pioniers and HCAW @ UVV.

There was at least one big surprise.

Curacao Neptunus @ Mampaey the Hawks  25 – 6

Yes you read it well. The final score was 25-6. Kind of handball game score.
Neptunus openend the score in the top of the second inning when they scored one run. But the Hawks bounced back in the bottom of the same inning. With Julian Goins at second with two outs, Ruben Raap singled to shortstop Stijn van der Meer. With runners on the corners, Gino Hersilia drew a walk to load the bases. When Chris Williams was hit by a pitch, Julian Goins scored the first run for the Hawks. Eventually Ruben Raap and Gino Hersilia scored both to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead. In the next inning, the team from Dordrecht would extend their lead to 6-1. But a monster inning, with a capital m, Three doubles, nine singles and a walk drove in twelve runs to give Neptunus a decisive score. A nine run sixth inning and a three run seventh ended the game in seven mercy rule innings.
Kevin Kelly earned the win after 2.1 innings of relief in which he walked one and fanned one. Tim Roodenburg was labelled with the loss as he gave up twelve runs on eleven hits in 2.1 innings. Roodenburg walked one and didn’t manage to strike a hitter out. Rien Vernooij collected the most hits for Neptunus as he went 4 for 5 with three runs batted in and a double. Brian Raap went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates – Corendon Kinheim  7 – 2

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, it took L&D Amsterdam Pirates four more innings to score again. In the fifth, Jesse Aussems drew a walk, followed by Rashid Gerard who was hit by a pitch. A single hit by Koen Nooij loaded the bases. After Roelie Henrique flew out to right field, Michael Duursma walked in the second run for Pirates. Nick Urbanus then hit a grand slam homerun to right field, to give Pirates a decisive 6-0 lead. After Pirates scored one more run in the sixth, Corendon Kinheim got on the board as Kevin Heijstek walked the first two hitters that he faced in that inning. A single by Victor Draijer loaded the bases. Consecutive ground outs by Bryan Engelhardt and Philip Ortez drove in two runs for Kinheim. But that was all for the team from Haarlem.
Kevin Heijstek pitched a complete game for the win. In nine innings he gave up two runs on four hits, walked four and fanned six. Glen Wassink took the loss as he pitched in 4.1 innings in which he allowed five runs (four earned) on two hits. He walked two and struck out one. Best hitter for Pirates was Rashid Gerard who went 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored and a double. Most impact though had Nick Urbanus with his grand slam homerun. Best hitter for Kinheim was Dudley Leonora, who collected two basehits in four at bats.

Pronto DSS @ Vaessen Pioniers  8 – 2

DSS took a surprising 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Ryan Miner singled to left center field, followed by Tino van Erk who doubled down the left field line to drive in Miner for the opening run. Levine Gabriels was hit by a pitch. He and Van Erk advanced on a wild pitch thrown by Lars Huijer. When Tommy van der Sanden singled to right center field, Gabriels and Van Erk scored. A one run seventh and eighth inning gave Pronto DSS a decisive 5-0 lead. The team scored three more insurance runs in the ninth, but in fact they were not needed as Vaessen Pioniers managed to score only two runs in the bottom of the ninth when Taylor Clemensia hit a two run homerun.
Jorn van Ingen lasted five innings for the win. He gave up three hits, walked two and struck out four. Lars Huijer surprisingly took the loss. He lasted seven innings in which he gave up four runs on seven hits. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. Tino van Erk went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Djewi Appelman went 1 for 1 in his sole at bat for Pioniers.

HCAW @ UVV  0 – 3

Depsite the fact that these two teams reside in the lower half of the standings, this was a high quality game. A real pitchers duel. UVV had runners in scoring position quite some times but never could cash in until the eighth inning. In the fifth there was a good example of bad baserunning when Norbert Jongerius decided to run to home from third on a hit ball hit by Joris van Ballegooij towards third base with only runners on second and third. Jongerius was tagged out at homeplate as third baseman Emersson Paula threw the ball towards home.
In the eighth inning HCAW’s defense collapsed. Tony Enos led off with a single to left field. Dennis de Quint then was hit by a pitch. Mike Bazuin’s single loaded the bases before a sac fly by Omar Williams drove in Tony Enos for the opening run.

Tony Enos scores the first run for UVV

A fielding error by pitcher Tony Kreisel allowed Norbert Jongerius to reach first base safely and to load the bases again. Consecutive singles by Jamie Verheyleweghen and Dennis Ribbens drove in two more runs to reach the final score of 3-0.
Winning pitcher was Jim Ploeger. He lasted eight innings in which he walked four and struck out seven. Until the seventh inning Ploeger had a no-hitter going on but in the seventh he gave up a single to Kevin Nieveld. Tony Kreisel took the loss as he gave up all runs in 0.2 innings. Best hitter for UVV was Jamie Verheyleweghen with three hits out of four at basts with a double and an RBI. Roy Seltenrijch was one of the hitters that collected a hit for HCAW. He needed three at bats, the other two four.
