Yankees snap losing streak with BIG numbers
The last couple of days the Yankees showed some uninspired baseball, sloppy defense and dormant bats. A couple of times they lost with big numbers.Especially at bat they looked like Pedro Cerrano from the movie Major League. Apparently they have given up on Jobu 😉 .
All of a sudden they knew how to hit again.
With a 14-1 victory over the Royals, one of MLB’s strongest teams, the Yankees snapped a six-game losing streak.
Nathan Eovaldi pitched some quality innings. In seven frames he gave up just one run on eight hits, walked one and struck out four.
For the change, the Yankee pitching was backed up by some serious offense. An eight run first inning in which Jeremy Guthrie gave up three long balls, made the difference. Only Mark Teixeira and Chris Young (pinch hit appearance) did not get a basehit.
Dutchie Didi Gregorius went 1 for 3. He struck out once, walked once and was hit by a pitch.
Slade Heathcott belted his first MLB homerun, a two run dinger, over the right field wall and continued his good start since his debut. So far he has appeared in four games and collected five hits out of twelve at bats with a double and a homerun.
Jacob Lindgren made his debut yesterday. The phenom appeared in the eighth and pitched the final two innings. He threw some filthy breaking balls for strikeouts. In total he faced eight batters. He gave up two walks and struck out two.
It needs more than one swallow to make a summer, but Lindgren may be a valuable addition to the Yankee bullpen. Of course yesterday’s performance may have been influenced by the big lead that the Yankees had. Of course with a 14-1 lead a pitcher will be more relaxed than with a 2-1 lead. But the way he has been pitching in the minors and with what he showed us yesterday, he has left a good impression.
With the Rays losing to the Mariners 4-1, the Yankees are now half a game out of a first place tie.
Yesterday’s game was a bright spot in a tough period. It is only one game, but the Yankees showed that they still can play some baseball. Perhaps Joe Girardi used some strong words in the locker rooms after Saturday’s defeat, to wake them up.
