Pineda has a stellar performance vs the O’s; Gregorius going 2 for 3

The Yankees won their third game of the four game homestand vs the Baltimore Orioles.

The Yanks outscored the Orioles 6-2 despite having as many hits as the team from Baltimore.

As the team performed well, there was one played that had a stellar outing: Michael Pineda. The 6′ 7″ (2 meter) giant fanned sixteen batters in seven innings of work. With this performance, Pineda was only two strikeouts shy of tying Ron Guidry’s 18K performance that he set in 1978 vs the California Angels in Yankee Stadium.

Didi Gregorius played a good game, both on the field as at bat. He made a slick fielding play in the seventh as he backhanded the hit by Alejandro de Aza for the force out at second. Further more Didi went 2 for 3 with a single, a double, two runs batted in and a HBP. In fact, Didi was the only Yankee with a multiple hit game, next to Carlos Beltran, whose bat came out of hibernation. Both had two hits in this game.

One negative note was that Esmil Rogers could only record one out before giving up a double to Jimmy Paredes and an RBI single to Adam Jones. This forced Joe Girardi to bring in Dellin Batances to get out of the inning and to pitch the final inning. This may hurt the team in the upcoming series vs and in Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay is also doing a lot better than expected. Too bad for them that they are hit by the injury bug. Today it was announced that pitcher Alex Cobb will undergo season ending Tommy John surgery. Reportedly, Drew Smyly has a torn labrum and may also face season ending surgery.
