Yankees and Dutchies in Spring Training, Wednesday April 1
Yesterday’s game between the Rays and the Yankees looked like an April Fools joke. The story line was the Yankees’ ineptness to hit. In nine innings, the Yankees collected the whopping total of four basehits; only Brett Gardner, Carlos Beltran, Ramon Flores and Mark Teixeira got a hit. The pitching didn’t really do a bad job. Chase Whitley went four innings in which he allowed one run on four hits and in which he struck out six. Esmil Rogers pitched 1.1 innings and also allowed one run (on two hits). He fanned three and walked one. Chasen Shreve also allowed a run, but he only pitched 2/3 of an inning. He didn’t get the necessary defensive support as Desmond Jennings scored on a fielding error by shortstop Brendan Ryan.
None of the Dutchies still at Spring Training camp managed to get a hit yesterday.
Despite scoring two runs on six hits, the Braves never really managed to start a rally. The first run was scored in the second ininng on a homerun by Joe Benson to right field. The second run was scored in the fifth after Pedro Cinaco got on third after a single, a fielding error and a sacrifice bunt. Eventually Ciraco scored on a passed ball. The other basehits were scatterd too much througout the game. Andrelton Simmons went 0 for 4 with a strike out and four runners left on base. Julio Teheran was labelled with the loss after he allowed the bulk of the Phillies runs: 7. Eventually the Phillies won 9-2.
In a 4-4 tie vs the Twins, Xander Bogaerts got on base once thanks to a walk. In the rest of the game he went 0 for 3 and left four runners on base. Xander committed a rare throwing error in the sixth inning, but that did not lead to any runs and made three outs (a caught pop up and two force outs).
The Nats were beaten up by the Marlins 8-0 as they were outhit 11 to 4 by the Fish. Matt den Dekker went 0 for 2 with two strikeouts and a runner left on base.
The Orioles and the Pirates ended the game with a 3-3 tie. Jonathan Schoop didn’t collect a hit as he went 0 for 3 with a strikeout and two runners left on base. Jonathan made five outs: he caught a line drive and made four 4-3 ground outs.
