Yankees and Dutchies in Spring Training, Saturday March 28
The Yankees were outslugged by the Orioles and fell 10-2. After missing the early part of the week to get dental work, Jonathan Schoop of the Orioles was pretty hot when going 2 for 4 with an RBI single and a two run double on a long fly ball into the left center field gap. According to MLB.com, Schoop was a stand out in this game.
The Yankees’ pitching was highly ineffective and was tortured by the O’s. If Scott Baker wants to make the Opening Day roster, he didn’t help his own case yesterday. In only two innings, he allowed five runs on five hits (one of them was a homerun). He fanned three though. Justin Wilson, who was acquired in a trade from Pittsburgh to keep the O’s at bay either. In 1.1 innings he allowed two runs on one hit, he walked one but struck out three though. Closer candidate Dellin Betances is struggling all Spring Training so far; and so he did yesterday. In one inning he allowed one run on one hit, he walked one and struck out one. Most important was the fact that Didi Gregorius was injured in the second inning. In an attempt to dive for a ball he tweaked his left wrist. He played on but left in the fifth, complaining that his wrist hurt with check swings. A-Rod and Stephen Drew both hit solo homeruns that put the Yankees’ only runs on the board. Eventually the Yankees were outslugged with 12 hits vs 3, 2 homeruns and 2 doubles vs only 2 homeruns.
The Red Sox beat the Rays 9-6. Xander Bogaerts went 0 for 3. On the defensive side, Xander made a couple of outs: two caught pop ups, a 6-4 force out, and a 6-3 ground out. Unfortunately he also committed a fielding error.
Andrelton Simmons went 1 for 3 in the 5-3 victory of the Braves over the Blue Jays. Once again Simmons showed his defensive skills when he chased down a fly ball into the outfield and made a smooth back handed catch.
In a similar score (10-2) the other New York team stayed at the right side of the score vs the Nationals. Matt den Dekker entered the game as a defensive subsitution in the top of the seventh. He went 1 for 2 with a double.
