In their final game of the round-robin, the Dutch women’s baseball team beat the Czech Republic by a wide margin of fourteen runs. The Dutch ladies needed only five innings to end the game prematurely.
Netherlands 17 – 4 Czech Republic
A five-run first inning and a ditto second laid the foundation for this solid victory.
Czech starting pitcher Barbora Kleckova pitched a full inning and faced seven batters without recording an out. By the time she was replaced, she had given up ten runs already, of which six were earned.
A single and a throwing error at a stealing attempt led to three more runs for the Dutch in the third inning. A bases-loaded HBP and a bases-loaded walk, followed by a double hit by Berber Jansen, drove in four more runs in the fourth.
What could the Czech Republic do in return? Besides scoring two runs in the first and two in the second inning not much. This time the pitching panned out well. Famke Gildenmacher pitched 4.2 innings in which she gave up four runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks as she struck out five. Her successor, Geertje de Witt recorded the final out of the fifth inning.
Berber Jansen was the best hitter for the Dutch as she went 2 for 3 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.
Thanks to this win, the Dutch have clinched a spot in the final, tomorrow, in which they will face France that hasn’t lost a game yet. The final will be played on Saturday and will start at 13:00 (1 PM) Central European Time.
