Yankees, Dutchies, Spring Training games: Light at the end of the tunnel

Yesterday the first Spring Training games were played. Two Dutchies saw action but didn’t fare quite well.

Jonathan Schoop was the starting second baseman for the Orioles vs the Detroit Tigers. Schoop went 0 for 3 with a strike out and a runner left on base. He got on base once thanks to a fielding error that allowed him to advance to second base.
On the defensive side he caught a pop out in the fourth inning.

The Red Sox played with split squads. In the game vs Northeastern University, Xander Bogaerts was the starting shortstop. He went 0 for 2, struck out once and left three runners on base. He recorded two outs in this game.

Then the Yankees. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first the Phillies jumped on Yankees prospect Luis Severino in the fourth. After cruising though the third inning Severino gave up two runs on four hits resulting in an ERA of 13.50. He struck out two batters though.

Another prospect didn’t deliver either. Rob Refsnyder, the second baseman that I hope to make the roster this year, went 0 for 2, struck out once, drew a walk and left four on base. Rob also made a throwing error that allowed the Phillies to score their fourth run.

Only two Major Leaguers participated for the Yankees: Jacoby Ellsbury and Bret Gardner. Both went 0 for 3 and left two runners on base.

Eventually, after trailing 5-1 the Yankees tied the game in the ninth, Mason Williams hit a lead off double and advanced to

Aaron Judge

third when Cole Figueroa hit a 6-3 ground out. Williams eventually scored on a single by Jake Cave. With runners on first and second, prospect Aaron Judge hit a towering homerun that just cleared the left center field wall, to tie the game at five.

Finally the first ST games have been played. There is light at the end of the tunnel, called winter.
