Why not trade Prado for a pitcher?
Earlier today I made a joke on Twitter about a trading Prado to the Giants in exchange for Bumgarner.
But afterall this may be not such a bad idea. If the Yankees bring Rob Refsnyder to play second base and he lives up to the expectations, Prado will be a spare part. Sure he can be used as utility infielder as I mentioned in one of my previous posts, but trading him away may be an option. Even an off season trade can be possible. Refsnyder will make the Majors sooner or later; why not next season?
The Giants are still looking for a replacement of Sandoval. The Yankees are in need of a starting pitcher.
I realize that the GIants will never trade away Bumgarner. I they would, their asking price would be way too steep.
How about Matt Cain? He had an injury riddled season that resulted in surgery to remove bone chips from the elbow of his pitching arm and to remove bone chips from his ankle. He may be a uncertain factor for the Giants.
But there are more teams that may be looking for a new third baseman:
The Detroit TIgers’ third baseman Nick Castellanos’ defensive numbers are similar to those of Martin Prado. But Prado is a much better hitter. David Price would would be a nice price. If the Yanks would trade for Price the must hammer out a deal this season, since Price is in the final season of his contract. But I think this will never happen. First of all the TIgers will ask a lot in return. And second of all, you can count on the fact that he will file for free agency and the Tigers will make a qualifying offer to get a draft pick in return.
The Kansas City Royals could use an upgrade as well. Both as a fielder and as a hitter, Prado was the better player over Mike Moustakas in 2014. The Royals have some nice options in their rotation but the only probable option may be Jason Vargas.
These are only three teams that can use Prado to improve. Maybe other teams will see his value as well. If not in a direct trade maybe a three-way trade can give the Yankees the extra starting pitcher they need. I think that Nick Prado can be a valuable chip in this.
