After my rant about the far from original name of the new LA Dodgers AAA team in Oklahoma City, I read some relieving news about the new Florida State League (A-Advanced) team of the Cincinnati Reds.
The new member of the Reds family will be called Daytona Tortugas. For those who do not speak Spanish (don’t worry, I am one of you), Tortugas is Spanish for turtle.
The logo was designed by Studio Simon from Louisville. Turtles are a species that is very much seen in the area of Daytona.
According to Tortugas general manager Josh Lawther, the team wanted an independent name that had a link to the area and which was not used by any minor league team or college team yet. The change was necessary after the Cubs left Daytona. The name Daytona Cubs as a Cincinnati affiliate would be a bit strange….
This is what the jersey and the cap look like
