Giancarlo Stanton signs extension with Marlins for a sloppy $325 MM

According to John Heyman of CBS, Giancarlo and the Miami Marlins have agreed on a 13 year contract worth $325 million.
Besides the fact that I think this is another ridiculous contract, I’d like to refer to a previous post about Jeffrey Loria, owner of the Marlins.

Loria always claimed that he never had the money for big contracts. For years he kept whining about losing money because he didn’t have a new baseball only stadium. As soon as he had his stadium, that was paid with public money for the biggest part, he started to throw with money. At the end of the 2012 season, he traded the players that he acquired to Toronto again because he claimed that he couldn’t afford them.

So how can he afford one player for this ridiculous amount? Sure I understand that he needs a face who the Marlins “fans” can identify with. But again the amount doesn’t make sense.

I won’t be surprised if Loria will trade Stanton in about five years, but deep down inside I hope that Loria will get stuck with this contract as long as it lasts.

The contract will contain a clause that allows Stanton to block a trade to certain clubs and there will be an opt out clause.

I wonder if the greed in baseball will ever stop.

To me there is only one winner in this deal: Stanton. I cannot imagine that Loria will sell enough merchandise to break even on this contract. How many fans do the Marlins really have?

I hope that this contract will be the sparkplug of a salary cap.
