Origin of Minor League team names: J

Since 2004 I am addicted to Minor League baseball. Not that it is easy to attend a game when you live in the Netherlands, but I love the way those clubs are more focused on families, children and the related entertainment.
In 2008 I attended my first Minor League game at Adelanto, CA. The High Desert Mavericks (A Advanced affiliate of the Mariners) hosted the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (then an Angels affiliate, now part of the Dodgers organization) in a California League matchup. Since then I am in love.

This time the letter J:

J

Jackson Generals:
From their inaugural season until 2010, the Generals were known as the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. The new name is reflective of the Jackson Generals minor league team based in Jackson during the first half of the 20th century.

Jacksonville Suns:
The first team known as the Jacksonville Suns began play in the Triple-A International League in 1962. The team had been founded in Havana, Cuba, where it was known as the Havana Sugar Kings. Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959 the team relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey, but soon folded; the franchise was bought by the Cleveland Indians, who moved it to Jacksonville as the Jacksonville Suns in 1962. The name Suns refers to the Sunshine State.

Jamestown Jammers:
The new team was named the “Jammers” after a fan vote, with the winning name beating out others such as the All-Americans, Furniture Makers, Jimmies, Lakers, Lucys, Muskies and Steamers.[2] The team’s logo was a Tasmanian Devil-esque character. The mascot was a similar character named J.J. Jammer. In the off-season before the 2006 season, in an attempt to put an end once and for all to the “what is a Jammer?” questions, the Jammers changed their logo to a cartoon grape theme. The new logo represents the strong tradition of grape-growing in Chautauqua County.

Johnson City Cardinals:
It doesn’t come as a surprise that this Rookie League team is affiliated with the Cards in St. Louis and that it adopted the name of the parent club which also owns the team.

Jupiter Hammerheads:
The Hammerheads are named after the hammerhead shark which can be found near the Florida coast.
