Could a marriage between the Yankees and Omar Minaya actually work?
I know, I know, this is not something related to Dutch baseball. But since I am a Yankee fan, I allow myself to write something other than Dutch baseball alone, once in a while.
I read a post on river avenue blues, a blog about the New York Yankees, that the Bronx Bombers are mulling to hire Omar Minaya. My first thought was: “Hell no!!! The guy did a not so good job (to put it mildly) with the Mets as a general manager. Why on earth would you hire someone like him?”

But as I read on, I realized that the Yankees want him in a scouting or advisory role.
Taking this into consideration, you have to know that Minaya has worked in similar roles for the Rangers, the Padres, the Mets and the Expos. For those clubs he was responsible for their farm system. In those years those teams had a terrific farm system.
Since our (yes, when it comes to the Yankees, I always talk in we or our…) farm system is far from good, I think this is the guy we need. Since the Steinbrenners took over, the emphasis always has been on acquiring big stars (with the exception of the period between 1990-2000). And at times it didn’t pan out very well. The latest example may be A-Rod and Mark Teixeira. Both are over the top, injury prone players, absolutely not worth the money that they are paid.
Could it be that Hal Steinbrenner wants to let this policy go? Why else would you hire someone who is a stud in building farm systems?
I’ll keep my fingers crossed. If my wish comes true, I count on a couple of seasons without playoff baseball or even a couple of losing seasons. But I prefer that, knowing that things will improve, over the way the Yankees are doing business now.
