Holland Series 2014: Game 4

      vs

Despite my fear that Rob Cordemans wouldn’t pitch, he was sent to the mound by manager Charles Urbanus.

But even with Rob Cordemans on the mound, L&D Amsterdam Pirates trailed after one inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, Kalian Sams proved his value for DOOR Neptunus. When he hit a double to left field, Benjamin Dille and Adrian Anthony scored. In their first at bat L&D Amsterdam Pirates scored after Roelie Henrique got on base on a single and stole second. A single by  Kenny Berkenbosch drove in Henrique to make it 2-1.

But the team from Rotterdam would score two more runs; one in the third and one in the seventh to make it 4-1.

Rob Cordemans lasted 6.1 innings and was tabbed with all runs that DOOR Neptunus scored. In the top of the seventh he gave up a walk to Adrian Anthony, who advanced to second after Benjamin Dille hit a 1-3 ground out. Then manager Urbanus pulled Cordemans in favour of Kyle Ward. With Ward on the mound Reily Legito hit a single to right field that allowed Anthony to score.  Then Legito was caught stealing after a pickoff move by Ward to first base and from first base to the shortstop. After Ward gave up a walk to Gianison Boekhoudt, Ward was pulled and replaced by Daan Hendrix. Hendrix kept the Neptunus batting order fairly in check despite giving up three hits and four walks. He didn’t allow them to score.  Eventually Hendrix was replaced by Chris Mowday with one out in the top of the ninth.

Orlando Yntema was pitching very well, just like Diegomar Markwell did on Thursday. Last Sunday Yntema was hit hard, but this time he had some good stuff. Eventually he lasted seven full innings.

Orlando Yntema went seven innings

Yntema was replaced by Jorian van Acker in the eighth inning. Things looked gloomy for L&D Amsterdam Pirates, but they started the eighth inning in full throttle. Kenny Berkenbosch led off the eight  with a single. Bas Nooij was very patient at bat. After a range of pitches (ball, ball, strike, strike, foul ball and a ball) he had a free pass. With a sharp single to right field, Remco Draijer drove in Kenny Berkenbosch and moved Bas Nooij to third base. After Draijer stole second, Jesse Aussems hit a single through the middle of the infield that drove in Bas Nooij, to make the score 4-3, still with DOOR Neptunus in the lead.

With Kevin Kelly on the mound for DOOR Neptunus ( he had entered the game in the eighth to replace Van Acker) and Bjorn Hato on first base as a pinch runner, there were two outs already. Once again things looked gloomy for the home team.but once again the proverb “It ain’t over until it’s over” proved to be true. Remco Draijer hit a single up through the middle. Percia Isenia was clutch when L&D Amsterdam needed him most. With a single to center field he drove in Bjorn Hato. Remco Draijer advanced to second base on this hit. Jesse Aussems became the game winner with a single to left field. Draijer could score the fifth and game ending run for L&D Amsterdam Pirates.

As written above, L&D Amsterdam used four pitchers. They combined for four earned runs on twelve hits. They gave up seven walks en struck out five. DOOR Neptunus used three pitchers who combined for five earned runs on thirteen hits. They walked six and struck out three.

Best hitter for DOOR Neptunus was Benjamin Dille who went 2 for 3. Dille scored twice. Kalian Sams had the most impact with his only hit out of three at bats. He drove in two runs with it.

Best hitter and hitter with the most impact for L&D Amsterdam was Jesse Aussems. He collected three hit out of four at bats and drove in two runs with them.

L&D Amsterdam is now one win away from winning the championship. The best place to do this would be at their homefield tomorrow.
