Rather unique baseball cooperation on both sides of US-Mexican border
This may something the current president of the United States may not like 😉 but Laredo TX and Nuevo Laredo, just across the border in Mexico will have a rather
unique baseball cooperation. Both cities will be the host of a Mexican League team.
To make this cooperation possible, a team in the Mexican League must move. That team is Rojos del Aguilla de Veracruz. The team will move to Nuevo Laredo and become the Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo. The will play half of its home games at Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo and half at Estadio Nuevo Laredo.
The plan to let the Tecolotes (owls) play half of its home games in the US, had to be approved by the city council of Laredo. Last Monday it became clear the cat is out of the bag as the council approved the plan.
Los Rojos de Aguilla de Veracruz has been bought by an ownership named 2L4L Baseball LLC. Laredo Mayor, Pete Sanchez, met for a press conference in Nuevo Laredo to announce the news and to present the new logo of the Tecolotes.
Laredo City Manager Horacio De Leon said the new ownership group will have all rights to Uni-Trade Stadium while the city will be responsible for maintenance of the field. The parties have agreed to a five-year term in which the city pays $125,000 per year for the marketing and promotion of the team. Of that total, $100,000 will be in cash. The remainder will be in promotions such as billboards and collateral.
Even though the cooperation is something special, the two Laredos were home to a Mexican League team before. From 1985 through 2002 Los Telocotes de Los Dos Laredos (the owls of the two Laredos). The team managed to win division titles in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1992 and 1993 and won the Mexican League title in 1989.
