Chris Dickerson calls it a career

He may not be the best-known player in baseball as he spent the final years of his career in the Minors, but he spent seven years in the Majors. Breaking into the Bigs with the Cincinnati Reds, the path of his career led to Milwaukee, New York, Baltimore, and Cleveland. After a fifteen-year professional career in both the Majors and the Minors, Chris has decided to hang up his spikes.

Many Dutch baseball fans will remember Chris Dickerson from his participation in the European Big League Tour, organized by Rick van den Hurk and his father.

I will mostly remember Chris for two things: As a player of the Yankees in 2011 and 2012 and for the moment I had the chance to talk to him during Rick van den Hurk’s European Big League Tour. During the brief conversation we had, he appeared to be a very friendly and social guy. If you followed him on Facebook, you could see he is socially committed as well, as he cares a lot about the environment. He is founder/ chairman of Players for the Planet Inc, a company that tries to educate all involved in youth, amateur and professional sports on how best to adopt environmental practices that will preserve the playing fields and stadiums where we all enjoy playing and watching sports. Quite a lot of sports stars like Giancarlo Stanton, Curtis Granderson, Francisco Cervelli, Mike Moustakas and many more are joining his efforts.

Chris made his first steps in professional baseball in 2003 with the Billings Mustangs (Advanced Rookie, Cincinnati Reds). After spending five years in the Minors, Chris Broke into the Majors in 2008 with the Cincinnati Reds. In that first year in which he played thirty-one MLB games, he posted a batting average of .304, a number he would never get close to again, even though his numbers weren’t bad in the first years of his MLB career.

After a stint with the Milwaukee Brewers, Chris played a total of eighty-five games, spread out over 2011 and 2012, with the New York Yankees.

After his final stint in the Major League in 2014 (with the Cleveland Indians), Chris spent the 2015 season in Buffalo (Bisons, AAA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays). In 2016 he even spent a season with the AA Bowie BaySox (Baltimore Orioles) and the 2017 season was spent in Norfolk with the Tides (AAA, Baltimore Orioles).
