Summing up the Dutchies per MLB organization: Atlanta Braves
Outside the Netherlands, Curacao and Aruba, most baseball fans will not know that Dutchies are not only playing in the MLB. There are a lot of Dutchies playing in the (low) minor leagues.
We Dutch like to speak about Dutch players but we have to admit that without the players from Curacao, Aruba and other overseas territories, the level of baseball in the Netherlands never would have been as good as it is right now.
I will sum up the number of Dutchies per MLB organization. Per organization there will be a post.I will start with the:
Number of Dutchies: 8
Andrelton Simmons:
Andrelton doesn’t need any introduction. He is two time consecutive gold glove winner (2013 and 2014) in the National
League. Simmons is mainly known for his slick fielding skills. So far this season he is hitting slightly better than his career average but he has his ups and his downs at bat. In his last seven games, Andrelton is only hitting .167. Currently Andrelton is bothered by a thumb injury that made him miss the last two games.
Defenisve wise, the 25-year old shortstop is heading to a possible third consecutive gold glove. In 101 games he only committed three errors so far.
Ozhaino Albies:
Ozhaino is the nr. 7 prospect of the Braves and is from Curacao. Also playing shortstop, he may be the successor of Andrelton Simmons. But the kid is only 18, so he may have a long way to go. He is the opposite of Andrelton Simmons. Last year, at the age of seventeen he was the best hitter in that age category of the Appalachian League for the Danville Braves. Ozhaino started the season in the Gulf Coast League, but after 19 games he was promoted to the Appy League, where he hit .356 for the season. For his age he is a polished hitter already. But he needs to work on his defensive skills. So far this season, he has played 93 games for the Rome Braves (South Atlantic League) in which he committed a whopping 17 errors.
Ray-Patrick Didder:
The next in line of Braves shortstops may be Ray-Patrick Didder. The 20-year old Aruban takes the place of Ozhaino Albies in Danville, at least according to his player page at MiLB.com. The reality is that he hasn’t played a game at shortstop so far. He played the fulll number of games (33) in center field, where he committed three errors.
At bat Ray-Patrick is doing fine. A .260 batting average may not be something to write home about but his OBP of .381 indicates that he is patient at the plate.
Kevin Josephina:
This 18-year old second baseman from Curacao is playing for the Gulf Coast Braves. Last season he played for the Braves in the Dominican Summer League and was promoted to the GCL Braves this year. So far he has played five games in which he collected 3 hits in 16 at bats (.188). In 2013 Josephina was signed for $300,000, in the same year as Ozhaino Albies. It shows that one player develops quicker than another.
Sander Boeldak:
The 18-year old outfielder from Curacao is playing for the Braves in the Dominican Summer League.
So far he played 43 games in 2015 and collected 55 hits in 165 at bats. In total he got seven extra basehits: four doubles, two triples and a homerun. When it comes to his defense, Sander still has a perfect score.
Before signing with the Braves, Sander played for the Groot Kwartier Stars in the highest youth competition of Curacao, where he excelled at bat.
Terrence Josephina:
Terrence signed a contract with the Braves in 2013. Like 2014, the 20-year old third baseman is playing for the DSL Braves. Compared to last season, his numbers have improved slightly. Last season he got a BA of .243, so far this season he is hitting .257. Terrence played eleven games on first base in which he didn’t commit an error so far. At third base he needs to work on his defense as he committed seven errors in 26 games, resulting in a fielding percentage of .924.
Raysheandall Michel:
Raysheandall was signed in 2014. In the same year he starred in the Senior League World Series, in which he hit a rare homerun to clinch the tournament victory for Curacao.
2015 is his first season as a pro. In the Dominican Summer League he is having a decent season at the plate. In 39 games he collected 47 hits in 157 at bats, resulting in a .299 BA. Last night (August 3) he went 2 for 5 with two RBI. He has played all three positions in the outfield and he is still perfect when it comes to his defense.
Ildion Martina:
This 18-year old catcher from Curacao played with Curacao in the Little League World Series of 2009, then as a left fielder.
So far Illdion is struggling at the plate in the DSL with a batting average of .111. Behind the plate he committed three errors so far and he threw out eight of twenty potential base stealers.
