Belgian Transactions for 2025: Borgerhout Squirrels
It’s that time of the year again to pay attention to the transaction in the Belgian Division 1. This time, we pay attention to Borgerhout Squirrels, that kept the core of the flagship team together.
According to manager Yannick Gontier, only one player has hung up his cleats: Lowie Helsen. He didn’t play many games in 2024 and has decided to stop due to injuries and lack of time.
Two additions from outside will join the Squirrels. Steff Roymans comes from neighbour Deurne Spartans, and Jackson Longhofer will leave Brasschaat Braves to reinforce the rotation of Squirrels.
Roymans did not impress at the plate with a batting average of .231. In only thirteen at-bats, he drove in three runs on three hits and a double. In total, Steff played only seven games in which he did not commit an error.
Jackson Longhofer’s arrival is quite a blow for Brasschaat, as he posted a 7-1 record with a 3.38 ERA. He struck out sixty-two and walked twenty-two.
Yannick Gontier stated that Borgerhout will focus on developing youth players. Natan Casie, Gienco Pacheco, and Matthias De Baets are youngsters who will get their shot to play with, and to earn a spot at the flagship team.
The Squirrels will aim for the top four but will look bigger opportunities, especially with the new playoff structure.
A big thank you goes out to Squirrels manager Yannick Gontier. He provided the much needed information to write this blog post.
