2023 Holland Series: Strike Two
Also in game two of the Holland Series, Amsterdam Pirates stayed at the right side of the score. This time the game was much closer, but nevertheless, the star studded Curaçao Neptunus didn’t manage to clinch the victory.
Curaçao Neptunus 1 – 3 Amsterdam Pirates
By the time Curaçao Neptunus got on the board, Amsterdam Pirates had taken a (more or less) comfortable 3-0 lead. In the top of the sixth inning, Dwayne Kemp singled to right field and was driven in on a double to left field, hit by Christian Diaz.
Pirates didn’t have big innings, but three one-run frames were enough to clinch the victory.
In the second inning, Kenny Berkenbosch was hit by a pitch. He stole second and advanced to third on a single by Jorrit Penseel. A force out at second base allowed Berkenbosch to score the opening run.
In the fourth inning, it was deja vu all over again when Kenny Berkenbosch was hit by a pitch. Jules Cremer bunted Berkenbosch over to second and Jorrit Penseel moved him to third on a 5-3 groundout. A balk allowed Berkenbosch to score from third.
In the fifth, Roelie Henrique doubled to right field and moved to third on a single by Tommy van de Sanden. Henrique scored when Denzel Richardson hit into a 6-4-3 double play.
Nelmerson Angela earned the win. In seven innings he allowed one run on five hits as he struck out two. Workhorse Kevin Kelly took the loss. In six innings of work, he gave up three runs on five hits and a walk as he struck out two. Pim Vijfvinkel earned the save as he gave up only one hit and struck out one in two innings of relief.
The best hitter for Amsterdam Pirates was Roelie Henrique, who went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Thanks to this victory, Amsterdam Pirates takes a 2-0 lead in the Holland Series, but we all know that it ain’t over until it’s over.
