2023 Belgian Series: Deurne Spartans Crush Hoboken Pioneers in Game One

In a rematch of last year’s Belgian Series, the Hoboken Pioneers hosted cross town rival Deurne Spartans. Unlike many expected, Hoboken didn’t stand a chance against starting pitcher Anderson Denny Gerdel Nieto. The Hoboken pitching staff, on the other hand, was hit hard, and Hoboken fell to Deurne 9-3.

In the first inning, Brayden Bebee struggled as he gave up a single and three consecutive bases-on-balls that allowed Spartans to open the score. Nando Mostaert then got on base on a fielders choice that drove in Daniel Bustamante for a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, with runners on the corners, Daniel Bustamante hit a sac fly to center field, that allowed Eder Hernandez Sarao to score Spartans’ third run of the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Pioneers finally got on the board when Jason Jie-Sam-Foek hit a sac fly to center field that drove in Vegas Tiliakos.

A single to center field by Elio Fundora Basnueva and a wild pitch scored two more runs for Spartans in the top of the sixth.

In the final two innings, Pioineers added two more runs, where Spartans scored four more in the top of the ninth.

It was one of those rare games in which the losing side outhit the winning side. Pioneers collected eleven hits, while Spartans collected seven. Spartans was highly effective with the game of small ball where Pioneers relied on the long ball in vain.

Anderson Denny Gerdel Nieto earned the win in a complete game effort. He allowed three runs on eleven hits and two walks as he fanned six. Brayden Bebee took the loss. In 5.1 innings, Bebee gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits and as many walks as he struck out six.

Elio Fundora Basnueva was the best hitter for Spartans. He went 2 for 4 with three RBI.

Game two will be played at Deurne Spartans today. Game time: 14.00 (2.00 PM).
