Today, only one game was scheduled, so automatically it qualifies for the “Match of The Day.” But even if more games had been scheduled, it may have earned the moniker “Match of The Day” because it was a very attractive one that was exciting until the final out.
Mortsel Stars 7 – 4 Borgerhout Squirrels
Right in the top of the first inning, Mortsel Stars opened the score of this game. Kenneth van de Velde led off with a single through the right side of the infield, moved to second on wild pitch, and to third on another wild pitch, and he scored eventually on Arne van Royen’s groundout.
Two innings later, the Stars would extend their score with four more runs. With runners on first and second, Nestor Jaspe to right center field and drove in John Paul Morgan. Kenneth van de Veld scored from third when Nestor Jaspe stole second base and the catcher made an mental error to throw him out. Arne van Royen then singled to center field to drive in Nestor Jaspe. Van Royen advanced to second base on the throw to home plate. A flyout to right field made Van Royen advance to third, from where he scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the third, Borgerhout did something back when Timen van Geel scored from second base on a single to center field, hit by Kevin Vervloet.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Squirrels nearly overtook the Stars. With no outs and runners in scoring position, Sam Boermans singled to center field and drove in Timen van Geel. Thanks to a walk drawn by Kevin Vervloet, the Squirrels loaded the bases. Then, Sander de Saedeleer singled home Tim Veraghtert, followed by Cedric Vandensompele that drove in Sam Boermans.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Stars added two more runs to their score when, with the bases loaded, Kenneth van de Velde hit a two-RBI single to center field.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Squirrels came close to add some more runs to their total when the team loaded the bases with two outs, but Timen van Geel grounded out to first base for the final out of the game.
Lowie Helsen earned the win, the first victory for the Stars this season. In seven innings, he allowed three runs on eight hits and seven walks, as he struck out two. Mouro van Mook took the loss. In 2.2 innings, he gave up five runs on four hits and three walks and struck out three.
Kenneth van de Velde clearly was the best hitter for Mortsel Stars as he went 4 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
