Lexington Legends Adopt New Moniker

Two years after the club was cut from affiliated ball by MLB, the Lexington Legends have adopted a new identity. Currently playing in the Atlantic League (Indy), the team has named itself the Lexington Counter Clocks.

Just like the name Legends, the new moniker relates to the horse racing, which Lexington is (world) famous for. Traditionally, horses in England raced around a grass track in a clockwise direction. To declare their independence from the British, Kentuckians began to race counter clockwise and on dirt instead of grass. Eventually, the horse racing world followed Kentucky’s example.

With the new name, two new logos/mascots were introduced: Hoss and Dinger.
Hoss the horse races to the left, charging toward home plate carrying a Big L-inspired ball player on his back.  For Dinger the clock, it’s game time all the time. His hands hold tight to a bat, ready to hit several home runs.

Lexington Counter Clocks owner Nathan Lyons via press release: “Throughout the process of developing our new team name and visual identity, we heard from hundreds of members of the local community, who all shared one thing in common: a deep pride of their state and of its rich history,” said . We have worked hard to reflect this hometown pride–and the significant role Central Kentucky has played in sports history–in our new name and visual identity. We’re thrilled to introduce the Lexington Counter Clocks to the community today, and we’re looking forward to what promises to be an exciting season of baseball.”

The club also released some merchandise. The Counter Clocks will sport the on-field cap showed below.
