Personal Stories About Ballcaps: Bonn Capitals Road Cap

This series is inspired by the must-read book “All Caps, Stories That Justify an Outrageous Hat Collection” by Craig Colby. Craig wrote this book about the many caps he has and the stories behind it. Anyhow, this series will be about the caps I own and the stories behind them.

In today’s episode of “Personal Stories About Ballcaps,” we pay attention to the road cap of the reigning German champions Bonn Capitals. You may wonder why the club is called Capitals. Well, that goes back to the days when Bonn was the capital of West Germany during the cold war days.

Before I bought this one at the Rheinaue Ballpark in Bonn, I had two caps of the Caps already. The home cap and a new all-green one, of which I don’t know if that is their new home cap or an alternate version. The team wore it in several games during the 2022 season. A friend of mine bought it when he attended the 2022 European Champions Cup in Bonn.

After spending time at a few German baseball games in May, 2022, I was craving one final game in Germany for the season. So I decided to attend game two of the German championship series between the Bonn Capitals and the Untouchables Paderborn. I didn’t have the intention of buying a cap, since I thought I didn’t like the road cap at all.

When arriving in Bonn, I had to walk all around the field as the entrance was on the other side of the ballpark. The ballpark of the Capitals is located in a park and surrounded by residential buildings. But I must say it is beautifully located.

As soon as I entered the ballpark, I could “taste” the great atmosphere. Fans were chatting and having a good time. I met Curaçao-born Phildrick Llewellyn, who is playing for the Untouchables Paderborn for several years now. After a short chat, I let him go on with the preparation for the game.

After the game started, the fans on both sides fired up their teams which contributed to the already great atmosphere. Of course, the speaker contributed in his own way. I walked around the ballpark to make some photographs but I had to film the ballpark and the fans that attended the game.

Eventually, I ended up at the fan shop. When I saw this all-black road cap, I liked it much better than I thought I would. So after some deliberation with myself, I could not resist buying it.

The interlocking yellow BC logo pops out thanks to the thin white outline. It really looks good on this black background. So far, I don’t regret this acquisition and it is another great addition to my cap collection.
