This series is inspired by the must-read book “All Caps, Stories That Justify an Outrageous Hat Collection” by Craig Colby. Craig wrote this book about the many caps he has and the stories behind it. Anyhow, this series will be about the caps I own and the stories behind them.
In today’s episode of “Personal Stories About Ballcaps,” we pay attention to two caps at the same time, for the change: Both the home and road cap of the Untouchables Paderborn.
This story goes back to the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most sports could not be practiced due to strict rules. Eventually, baseball in the Netherlands could be played but fans were not allowed to attend. I was lucky enough to attend games at my favorite club in the Netherlands because I always took pictures. But without fans in the stands, the atmosphere wasn’t all that great.
At one point, fans in Germany were allowed to attend games but under strict regulations. As long as they were seated, and kept two seasts between other fans and themselves, they didn’t have to wear a mask. But as soon as they started to walk around, they had to put on their mask again. So a friend of mine and I agreed to going to attend a game in Paderborn because the Untouchables hosted my favorite German club, the Dohren Wild Farmers. Of course it was a good opportunity for us both to acquire some new caps.
The first thing we did when we arrived was going to the Untouchables fan shop, which is located near the entrance of the ballpark. I couldn’t resist to buy the home cap of the Untouchables.
Between the two games of the double header, I went to the Wild Farmers dugout to say hi to the head coach and a player I happen to know. Unfortunately, the Untouchables were too strong, so the Wild Farmers didn’t really stand a chance. But nevertheless we saw several nice plays, so we enjoyed the game anyway, let alone the atmosphere, which is always good with German baseball games.
During the game, my friend proposed to buy me the road cap of the Untouchables instead of giving me money for the fuel. You may guess I didn’t have to think very long to accept that offer.
So we went back to the fan store and he bought this road cap for me and form himself.
This all-black road cap is quite sober compared to the home cap, but I like it anyway.
Both caps are a nice addition to my collection and most of all they are a nice souvenir of a great baseball trip to Paderborn during a time the world was locked up.
