Yesterday, the KBBSF (Royal Belgian Baseball and Softball Federation) presented the schedules for all baseball and softball leagues. The main attention in this blog post will be for Division 1 even though there is some good news to be told about Belgian baseball and softball in general.

According to the press release, there will be 168 teams in competition in 2022 (14 teams more than in 2021): 51 baseball teams, 28 softball ladies, 12 softball men, 14 slow pitch softball, and 63 youth teams in a total of 13 divisions.
Overview of the number of teams per season in the past three years:
- in 2019 (pre Corona) there were 151 teams in competition
- in 2020: 140
- in 2021: 154
- in 2022: 168
After the withdrawal of the Antwerp Eagles from Division 1, the KBBSF had some talks about what to do about the number of teams in the upcoming season, but it is clear Division 1 will contain 11 teams instead of 12. Opening Day will be on April 16. The final weekend of round 1 will be the weekend of June 16.
Division 1 A will contain of the following six teams:
Brussels Kangaroos
Deurne Spartans
Hoboken Pioneers
Merchtem Cats
Namur Angels
Sunville Tigers
Division 1 B will contain of five teams:
Borgerhout Squirrels
Brasschaat Braves
Gent Knights
Mont-Saint-Guibert Phoenix
Mortsel Stars
The top 3 teams of each division will advance to the Division 1 Gold, which can earn them a spot in the Belgian Series. The bottom three of Division 1 A and the bottom two of Division 1 B will play in Division 1 Silver to prevent relegation, at least that is what would happen normally. But in the 2021 season, there were also 11 teams and no team could be demoted, so it is to be expected that none of the Division 1 Silver teams will be demoted either.
Here are the schedules of the 2022 Division 1 season.
