Walk Along European Foul Lines

Time for another overview of the results of the European Leagues that have started already.

Baseball Bundesliga 2021

A surprising result this weekend as the Diving Ducks Wiener Neustadt beat the leaders in the Baseball Bundesliga East standings, Dornbirn Indians twice. In game one, the Ducks won with the smallest possible margin: 1-0. In game two, Dutchie Rick van Dijck limited the Indians to two runs (one earned on four hits and three walks as he struck out eight in 6.1 innings for the win: 6-2.

For the rest no surprising results on Saturday as the Vienna Metrostars beat up the Feldkirch Cardinals 24-2 and 17-0 and the Traiskirchen Grasshoppers showed no mercy with the Hard Bulls: 15-0 and 24-3.

On Sunday, the Vienna Wanderers took on the Attnang-Puchheim Athletics. In game one, the Athletics could keep pace with the Wanderers but eventually lost 12-10 in a come-back-from-behind. But in game two they did not stand a chance as they were beaten 12-2 in seven innings.

From one surprising result to the other. The Tempo Titans clinched the series vs Draci Brno as they beat the current Czech champion 6-2 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday. Brno salvaged the series on Sunday as it beat Tempo Titans 5-2.

Sokol Hluboká beat lowly Olympia Blansko in the first two games of the three game series. On Friday, Sokol won 1-0. On Saturday, Sokol clinched an 8-5 over Olympia. Sokol completed the sweep on Sunday by beating Olympia 12-2.

Eagles Praha did the same as the previous two winners. It beat crosstown rival Kotlarka 11-7 and 3-0. And so did Arrows Ostrava. On Friday they clinched a 13-2 victory over Blesk Jablonec. On Saturday, they rehashed the whole thing again as they won 18-0. But also this time the team that lost the previous two games, won the final game as Kotlarka beat Eagles 10-7. Arrows completed the sweep by beating Blesk 10-2.

The doubleheader on Saturday between Hrosi Brno and Trebic Nuclears was split. Hrosi won game one 7-4, the Nuclears won game two clearly with 12-0. So it all came down to the rubber game on Sunday. The Nuclears clinched the series by beating Hrosi 12-6 on Sunday.

In the opening matchup of the Northern Division between the Solingen Alligators and the Hamburg Stealers, the Allis stayed at the right side of the score twice. Game one was a 12-5 victory for the team from the “Klingenstadt” and game two a 10-5 win. Dutchy Giovanni Tensen pitched seven solid innings in the first game, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and five walks, as he struck out four.

Finally, Heidenheim ran into its first loss of the season. On Friday night the reigning champion was still too strong for the Regensburg Legionäre: 8-3. But on Saturday, Ross Vance of Heidenheim was beaten up in the first inning as he allowed six runs, thanks to a grand slam homerun by Elias von Garssen that handed a 10-3 victory to the Legionäre.

As written before, things are not running smoothly for the Mainz Athletics this season. After a rather simple victory in and against Tübingen (14-6), the team did not stand a chance against the Hawks in the second game as they fell 10-0.

Facing the weakest opponent of the Southern Division, the Munich-Haar Disciples won both games vs the IT-Sure Falcons from Ulm with double digits: 21-4 and 22-3. Thanks to these two victories and the unexpected loss of Mainz in Tübingen, the Disciples have jumped into fourth place with a 6-6 record, trailing first place Heidenheim by five games.

On Sunday, the Stuttgart Reds took on the Mannheim Tornados. The Tornadoes completed a surprising sweep as they beat the Reds 13-10 and 15-2. Thanks to this sweep, the Tornadoes now share fourth place with the Munich-Haar Disciples with a 6-6 record.
