Eurpean Champions Cup 2019: L&D Amsterdam Pirates beat Deurne Spartans in lopsided game

L&D Amsterdam Pirates 17 – 0 Deurne Spartans
In a very lopsided game in which Deurne Spartans got one hit, L&D Amsterdam Pirates only needed five innings to seal Deurne’s feat. After leading 2-0 at the start of the second inning, four singles, a double, a walk, a home run and some aggressive base running, led to nine runs for Pirates in the second inning. By then it wasn’t a game anymore but the Dutch pushed for six more runs in the following innings to reach a 17-0 score.
Manager Brian Finnegan sent Steven van Groningen to the mound, a former Dutch hoofdklasse pitcher who is now playing for the farm team of L&D Amsterdam Pirates. Even though Van Groningen isn’t performing at the highest Dutch level lately, Deurne Spartans didn’t have a chance as he allowed only one hit and struck out four in four innings. Rifaela Hernandez pitched a perfect fifth frame in which he struck out one.
With seventeen runs scored, one would expect a slugfest but Pirates only hit five extra-base hits: three doubles, a triple and a home run.
Delano Selassa was clearly the best hitter for L&D Amsterdam Pirates as he went 4 for 4 with a home run, a double, four RBI and three runs scored.
Even though he pitched only four innings, Steven van Groningen earned the win. Sharlon Lebacks took the loss after 1.1 innings in which he allowed eleven runs on eight hits and two walks.
