Hartford Yard Goats become Steamed Cheeseburgers

Through the years, naming teams after a food has become a great source of income for Minor League teams. The newest example is the Hartford Yard Goats, who will adopt the name Steamed Cheeseburgers for one day.

It all started a few years ago with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs adopting the Bacon USA moniker. Swiftly they were followed by the Fresno Grizzlies, who adopted the name Fresno Tacos for several games per year. Especially the Tacos moniker was a blast. Since 2015, the Grizzlies come out with new merchandise each year.

Even though the logo says Steamed Burgers, the Twitter account of the Yard Goats states the club will be called Steamed Cheeseburgers. The club will adopt the temporary identity on August 12.

According to Wikipedia, a Steamed Cheeseburger also referred to as a steamer or steamed ham in reference to a popular internet meme is a hamburger sandwich topped with cheese that is cooked via steaming and almost exclusively served by restaurants in central Connecticut in the United States.

By choosing the name Steamed Cheeseburgers, the club wanted to pay homage to a typical Connecticut icon. The team will unveil a special line of clothing, caps and perhaps jerseys in addition to the Steamed Cheeseburgers moniker.

In the recent past, teams have been named after Whoopies (Reading Fightin’ Phils), Salt Potatoes (Syracuse Chiefs), Plates (Rochester RedWings) and Slices (Brooklyn Cyclones), just to name a few. Recently the Trenton Thunder announced they will adopt the name Pork Rolls during Friday night home games to celebrate the club’s 25th anniversary.

Now many clubs have been named after a food, it becomes less original. But nevertheless, the fans love it as the merchandise are hot sellers.
