Bite falls to Blue Sox despite good performance by Bas Nooij
Going 0-3 after the first three games of the season, the Adelaide Bite are close to being swept by the Sydney Blue Sox. A good performance by Dutchie Bas Nooij, could not prevent the Blue Sox beating the Bite 10-1 on Friday, and 4-3 and 5-4 in today’s double header.
Adelaide Bite @ Sydney Blue Sox: 1-10, 3-4 and 5-4
Bas Nooij went 0 for 1 in a pinch-hit appearance in Friday’s 10-1 loss against the Sydney Blue Sox, but in one of today’s games, he went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
In the seven-inning first game of today, Both teams scored twice in the first inning but Adelaide took a one-run lead in the fourth. But eventually, Sydney bounced back by tying the game in the sixth inning and scoring the walk-off run in the seventh on a wild pitch by Matt Williams.
In the nine-inning game of today, Sydney scored enough runs in the first four innings for the win. Trailing 5-2, Adelaide rallied for two more runs in the fifth inning to get within a run from the Blue Sox. Despite having runners on the corners with no outs in the seventh, Adelaide failed to cash in. American pitcher with a German passport, Clayton Freimuth earned the win after giving up four runs in five innings as he walked two and struck out seven.
German-born Sven Schueller earned the save in the 5-4 victory as he retired the side in the ninth inning.
Canberra Cavalry @ Brisbane Bandits: 5-8, 4-5 and 2-5
The Canberra Cavalry and the Brisbane Bandits had the honor to open the season on Thursday. In the three games the two played so far, Brisbane made clear the team is going for a three-peat as the team won the Claxon Shield in the previous two seasons.
On Opening Night, both teams kept each other in check until the second half of the seventh inning as the score was tied at four. But in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bandits rallied for four runs to keep the win 8-5 win in Brisbane.
In the second game (on Friday), Canberra blew a three-run lead as they fell 5-4 to the Bandits.
The intention was to play a doubleheader today, but after the first, seven-inning game was played, game two was rained out. In the game that was played, the Cavalry never came close to winning the game. The Bandits rallied for four runs in the fourth and walked off the field as a victor.
German Donald Lutz went 1 for 6 in two games and scored twice.
Perth Heat @ Melbourne Aces: 9-1, 5-6 and 10-5
Despite striking out nine on Friday, Melbourne’s ace, Mark Hamburger allowed six runs in six innings for the loss. Melbourne was no match for the Perth Heat as they were beaten 10-1. In the first game of today, Melbourne got it’s revenge, even though it was a close score. After seven innings the score was tied at four, so extra innings were needed. The Heat scored the walk-off run on a two-out double hit by Liam Bedford.
In the second game of today, the Heat placed the Aces’ pitching on the rack for ten runs as they beat the Aces 10-5.
The one big name the Aces acquired, Delmon Young, did not impress in the batter’s box so far. In two games, Young went 0 for 8 and was fanned four times.
