Dutch hoofdklasse 2017: Round 3, day 2
Today the returns of yesterday’s matches were scheduled. Curaçao Neptunus headed to Oosterhout to meet De Glaskoning Twins, HCAW hosted DSS and Pickles UVV went to neighboring Hoofddorp to take on Pioniers.
Curaçao Neptunus 8 – 4 De Glaskoning Twins
Another defeat for De Glaskoning Twins, but again they played a bit better.
Elton Koeiman, last year with Twins, was forced to pitch for Neptunus due to injuries in
the pitching staff. Koeiman kept Twins in check rather well as it took the team from Oosterhout until the fifth inning to get on the board, when they scored two runs to make it 6-2. Reynaldo Sarmiento
pitched for Twins and lasted five frames in which he allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits for the loss. Thanks to a double by Benjamin Dille, Neptunus took a 2-0 lead in the third inning and that was the difference between Neptunus and Twins. Where Twins got just one double, Neptunus hit six, which is the strength of the team.
In the sixth inning, Sarmiento gave up three more doubles which lifted the lead of Neptunus to 6-0. Sarmiento did not have any control issues as he only walked three.
He was replaced after the fifth inning by Nick Peels, who pitched the remainder of the game by allowing only one run on three hits.
In the eighth inning, Twins cut Neptunus’ lead in half when Chris Gé drew a leadoff walk and stole second before Nick Peels hit a double to left field. Peels scored on back-to-back
groundouts.
Elton Koeiman earned the win. In seven innings he gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks as he struck out five.
Best hitter for Curaçao Neptunus was Benjamin Dille, who went 4 for 4 with a RBI and three runs scored.
DSS 1 – 4 HCAW
In a much closer game than yesterday’s game, HCAW stayed at the right side of the score again, but the score was much more bearable for DSS.
All HCAW needed was one inning to win this game. HCAW loaded the bases in the third inning and opened the score on a wild pitch by Mike Groen. Delano Selassa followed with a sac fly to right field that drove in Raoell Kortstam for the second run. A single by Vince Rooi and a double by Rossini Frolijk drove in two more runs for HCAW.
In the top of the eighth, DSS did something back when they loaded the bases on a single by Levine Gabriëls, a walk by Devano Pieter and a single by Sven van de Sanden. A 6-3 groundout by Thomas Bos drove in the sole run for DSS. DSS had runners in scoring position a few times, but could not cash in, but so did HCAW.
Winning pitcher was Kaj Timmermans. In 6.2 innings, he gave up two hits, walked six and struck out one. Despite pitching a decent game, Mike Groen was tabbed with the loss
as he gave up the four runs that HCAW scored. In six innings, he gave up seven runs, walked four and struck out three.
Best hitter for HCAW was Rossini Frolijk, who collected three hits in four at bats with a double and a RBI.
Pickles UVV 3 – 8 Hoofddorp Pioniers
Hoofddorp Pioniers had a quick start as the team scored three runs in the first inning.
Two errors and a dropped infield fly allowed Pioniers to take a 3-0 lead.
Pickles UVV on its turn got on the board in the third inning when Mike Bazuin doubled to left field and advanced to third on a fielding error by first baseman Jeffrey Arends, that allowed Berend Ruben to reach first base safely.
UVV would score two more runs, one in the fifth and one in the seventh. Pioniers, on the other hand, had another big inning in the fifth. Mervin Gario drew a leadoff walk, stole second
and advanced to third on a failed pick off. After Quentin de Cuba drew a walk, Shurman Marlin and Brennan Nijhof came through with back-to-back singles, driving in two runs.
Eventually, Joey Eeman singled home two more runs with a single to right field.
