Stijn van der Meer released by Astros

Through his Instagram account, Dutch shortstop Stijn van der Meer announced he was realeased by the Houston Astros.

Van der Meer was drafted by Houston in the 34th round of last year’s amateur draft.

IMG_0045Stijn was sent to the Gulf Coast League where he tore apart the opponent’s pitching with an aversge of .667 in just two games. He was sent to Advanced rookie Greenville where he still had an aversge of .301 in 22 games.

According to his brother, the Astros wanted to send him to the Gulf Coast League again at the start of the season. After an apparent conversation, he was sent to A-Advanced Buies Creek, where he hardly got playing time. But in the games hevplayed, he struggled at the plate.  In the six games he played in the Carolina League, he collected three hits in nineteen at bats (.158).

It is very likely that Stijn will return to his Dutch hoofdklasse club Curacao Neptunus  .
